Plasmids: Histories of a Concept

This website is part of an experiment in preserving the history of specific scientific areas. The goal of this website is to collect and disseminate information related to the discovery, use, and understanding of the genetic elements called plasmids. The project is aimed at collection of information from a wide population of participants in the field of plasmid research. We hope all visitors will consider contributing to this archival database either by our structured "interview" (below) or by sending us your freeform comments.

This project is aimed at collecting a very broad range of historical material about plasmids and so the comments, recollections, and documented history of all plasmid workers will be useful.

The Basic Historical Account linked to this site represents only one possible account of the history of plasmid research, and it can be greatly enriched, made more accurate, and expanded into overlooked areas, if we can incorporate input from as many scientists as possible who have been involved in plasmid research.

One way to help you think about this project is to request your responses and reactions to The Basic Historical Account and Plasmid Time Line, and the Plasmid Research Group Map. Your reactions can be sent to us on line using the forms below, by email (william.summers@yale.edu), or by regular mail (Plasmid History Project, c/o W.C. Summers, 333 Cedar St. New Haven, CT 06520-8040).

Please fill in the following form (the space is not limited if you want to type more that fits into the visible boxes):
1. Your Name:
2. What is your occupation?
3. What is your address? (Optional)
4. What is your email address? (Optional)
5. Do you work (or have you worked) with plasmids?
6. What was your first encounter with plasmids?
7. Who were the most influential workers in your plasmid work?
8. What were the goals of your research involving plasmids?
9. Do you think the Basic Historical Account, the Early Bibliography, and the Research Group "Map" is accurate and complete? What would you add, delete, or modify?
